19th of December 1998, he died of colon cancer after about 4 years of treatment. I was there everyday to watch how he deteriorated over the years, apart from the hospital visits he had.
You might ask, why post here in this forum? I guess because he was an entertainer locally in our little town. During the 1980s in Scotland at New Year in particular, every Tom Dick, and Harry came around with a bottle of something to join in on the party. My dad could play five instruments, guitar, mouth organ, accordion, flute, and keyboard and oh he could sing whilst playing the guitar too which was something else. We didn't have the internet in the 1980s so the CB radio was the entertainment device of the day, which we used. With just 40 channels and 19 being the go-to channel for those seeking a copy, "break one nine a copy cum-mon" as the lingo, people easily found other out where the chatter was and oh the music. With a 40 to a 60-mile radius that a good tall arial could provide, it wasn't hard for everyone to hear unless there was what we called 'skip', which was due to the activity of the sun, making it hard to hear people through the white noise.
His influence in music and what I saw him playing probably affected me to start creating music so young. Trying to play full-size keys at 4 years old was a bit of a stretch though until I got my first keyboard which everyone who follows my rambling will know about by now.
Anyway, it's been quite a strange day.
